My journey is similar to many a parent of a struggling reader. I could see my sons were having a difficult time with reading and writing but when I mentioned it at school I was told they would be okay and that children develop at different rates.
I later learned that this statement is not a factual one and that a Balanced Literacy Approach, which our primary school was using was never going to effectively teach my children to read. They were likely to end primary school without being able to be read and write well (as 1 in 3 Australian children do now) .
Covid hit and schooling was moved to home I was horrified to see just how behind they were and the impact it was having on their self esteem.
We engaged a qualified Sounds Write Tutor to help and immediately saw improvement in both reading and writing skills. I learned what evidence based practice was and why the science of reading is integral to teaching all children to read.
We then moved overseas and couldn’t find a qualified tutor. I knew we needed that support, so I studied and became their tutor, a certified Sounds-Write practitioner. I was now a Qualified English Tutor.
Upon returning to Australia, again it was difficult to find a qualified tutor or therapist using evidence based teaching, so I continued and also started tutoring other struggling readers. I have continued to this day to help many struggling readers become confident readers and catchup in literacy at school.
My children’s story ended with a diagnoses of dyslexia and dysgraphia. They were never going to do okay left alone battling to learn, they needed evidenced based instruction. Not all struggling readers have dyslexia or other learning difficulties but all struggling readers will not learn on their own. They do need help and they need the appropriate kind of help.
The Sounds-Write program is hands down the reason why my sons grew in confidence and in literacy ability, it was life changing.
I don’t think any family should have to struggle the way ours did but unfortunately many do and while schools continue with Balanced Literacy instruction or do not follow Evidence Based programs with fidelity, I think many will.
Every child has the right to be taught to read and write.
Mine is just one story.
